Though butter has a bad reputation among the popularity,
but margarine also shares some of its drawbacks. The suggestion of experts is
to consume moderate amount of butter and margarine as well.
The debate whether butter or margarine is healthier has
raged since many years. But as per nutritionists expertise both butter and margarine
should consumed in moderate amount.
Both butter & margarine have same fat content & Calories.
Let’s try
to understand both with their production processes & history.
Margarine
The story of invention of margarine is quite violent. Due
to Prussian war in 1869 the challenge was given to invent “cheaper and bulk
quantity butter” for soldiers and lower-class peoples. One of French chemist was
successive to emulsify beef fat, milk and salt to create first margarine. Over the
time now a days the beef fat is replaced with vegetable fat for margarine.
Margarine also contains water, whey, salt, colouring and
emulsifiers to bind oil and liquid. Margarine needs to fortified with vitamin A
and D.
While manufacturing of margarine, the process of
hardening of liquid fat changes the chemical structure of fatty acid from unsaturated
fatty acid to trans fatty acid (a less healthy effect on body same as saturated
fats). This may cause higher Cholesterol & heart diseases.
The story of invention of butter is unique & exciting.
Long time back in ancient time some chilled milk in a sack shaken on the back of
an animal on a bumpy trail & the chilled milk transform into butter.
Churning of chilled milk is the important stage to obtain
butter. We can find vitamin A and D naturally in butter. Vitamin A plays a
vital role in healthy vision & healthy skin. Vitamin D helps the body to absorb
calcium, which is most required vitamin to maintain bones & teeth healthy.
Still after all discussion moderate
consumption of both “Margarine & Butter” is recommended, as intake of any
of both may affect unhealthy causes on our body.
