What is Alcohol?

The chemical name of Alcohol is Ethanol(C2H6O).

Alcohol is formed when micro-organisms (for example Yeast) ferments (breaks down without oxygen) the sugars in different food. Alcohol acts to depress the central nervous system at high doses & controlled doses, alcohol can act as a stimulant. Uncontrolled doses of alcohol may lead to drowsiness, respiratory depression (where breathing becomes slow, shallow or stops entirely), coma or even death.

Whom & where Existed?

Fermented beverages existed in early Egyptian civilization, though early alcoholic drink was existed in China around 7000 B.C.

Nutritional Values: -

Alcohol is a source of energy and provides 7 calories per gram. For distilled spirits, a standard serving 44 ml (1.5 US fl oz), which at 40% ethanol, would be 14 grams and 98 calories. Wine 150 ml (5 US fl oz) and beer 350 ml (12 US fl oz) contain a similar range of ethanol quantity, but these beverages also contain non-ethanol food energy. A 150 ml serving of wine contains 100 to 130 calories. A 350 ml serving of beer contains 95 to 200 calories. According to the 2013–2014 surveys, women in the ages 20 and up consume on average 6.8 grams/day and men consume on average 15.5 grams/day.

 Alcoholic beverages are considered empty calorie foods because other than food energy they contribute no essential nutrients.

Health Harm: -

Alcohol abuse and dependence are major health problems as well as death can result from excessive alcohol use. Alcohol dependence is linked to a lifespan that is reduced by about 12 years to the average person. It has estimated that 4% of deaths worldwide were attributable to alcohol use. The leading chronic alcohol-related condition associated with death is alcoholic liver disease. Alcohol dependence is also associated with cognitive impairment and organic brain damage. 

# Two or more consecutive alcohol-free days a week have been recommended by advisors to improve health and break dependence.

Some of bad effects: -   Shrinking Brain, Change in Behavior, Blackout, Hallucination, Dependence, Slurred Speech, Heart Damage, Cancer, Liver Damage, Lung Infection, Pancreatitis, fatigue, frequent Diarrhea, Stomach distress, Infertility, birth Defect, Sexual Dis-function, Thinning Bones, Malnutrition, Change in coordination, Diabetes, Muscle Cramps, Numbness.
