Building a COVID-19 Response Plan: What You Should Know

“There are two key benefits to drafting an infectious disease preparedness and response or COVID-19 response plan,” said Jeni Lamb Rogers, JD and MS, during an SFA Ask the Experts webinar. “If it’s done well, it will help you stay open, prevent people from getting sick, and help you to adapt and manage if or when they do.”

Such a plan is also beneficial if you get sued, according to Rogers, so that you have a plan to show you’ve done everything you can to make it as safe as possible to come to work. “While it’s not a complete defense, it shows that you are adhering to the standard of care within the industry,” she said. “These plans have become the expectation for what a prudent and responsible business owner is going to do to make sure that their workers are protected.”

Rogers shared seven key steps to building a COVID-19 response plan, including assessing risk factors, identifying prevention measures and controls, training workers, and identifying contingency plans.
